Shiny Object Syndrome

The boring and mundane will always make you more money than the shiny object.

Business is built on principles and foundations, and those aren’t exactly the most exciting parts of doing business - but they are the most important.

If you’re anything like me, you may suffer from shiny object syndrome and/or have the attention span of a gnat. It’s way too easy to get distracted and want to spend time on the more fun and creative aspects of building your handmade biz - that’s why it’s important to nail down the fundamentals first.

Your business is ONE thing - it’s a machine, and the principles and foundations that make it work are the gears that keep your business running (ie. making money).

This includes things like;

  • order confirmation emails

  • pick-up/delivery reminders

  • offer announcements

  • deadline reminders

  • list building

  • payment systems

  • daily/weekly action plans

  • ordering supplies

  • production

  • offer planning

  • marketing

Those are all examples of things that are vitally important, but not that fun to do. That’s why creating systems and processes to run your business machine (ie. working ON your business) is the key to consistency AND future growth.

Manually doing all of those tasks takes up a TON of time and mental energy, but you can get ALL of that time and energy back when you take the time to systemize and automate the repetitive tasks that are essential to running your business.

Think of it like this; the principles and foundations of your business are like the wood and screws that hold your house together - they’re not that exciting, but they need to be done before you can move on to the paint and decor.
